The Shawshank Redemption
The Shawshank Redemption (1994) is about a former banker, Andy Dufresne, serving a life sentence for a crime he did not commit. The movie presents aspects of life we are all familiar with when we watch television or read newspapers: brutality; terrorism; corruption; fear; desperation; bureaucratic indifference; and isolation. But this engrossing film is also about hope and holding on to a sense of self. It is about persevering against tremendous odds and meeting challenges through purpose, self-reliance, and community.
After a harrowing and physically abusive ordeal, Andy steels himself to shape his future. He remarks: “I guess it comes down to a simple choice, really. Get busy livin’ or get busy dyin’”. Andy chooses to live. He uses his banking and book keeping skills to make himself indispensable to prison guards and administration. These same skills allow him to realize his ultimate dream after years of disiplined planning and effort.
Andy understands there is a community behind bars. His helping actions gain him the respect, support, and admiration of fellow inmates. Andy believes in himself, in his self worth, and the future. He moves toward his goals with purposeful action and quiet determination. His positive attitudes foster a vision of life beyond prison.
This movie can inspire and motivate. The viewer sees the human spirit triumphant, even in the bleakest circumstances.
Cool Runnings
Cool Runnings (1993) is a Hollywood “feel good” type movie, very enjoyable for all members of the family. Based on a true story, this film is about four young men from Jamaica who, along with their coach, form the first Jamaican bobsled team. They eventually go on to compete in the Calgary Winter Olympics. The film offers character development, comedy, action, and competition within a somewhat predictable plot. It also suggests ways of coping with challenging times.
All five men have different objectives for competing in the Olympics. Their personal goals vary in how developed and purposeful they are, but they all have goals. Stating goals and moving toward them in an organized and disciplined way is an important part of planning your future. Take a look at the Principles of Goal Setting and see how it fits in your life plans.
The five main characters are united by commonalities but their bonds are also strengthened by their diversity. Their different strengths all combine and contribute to their eventual success. Embracing diverse relationships enriches our life experience and often offers new ways to meet life’s challenges. Working with people different from ourselves can spur our imagination and broaden our perspectives.
